 Turn out the lights

George W. Bush's presidential approval rating has hit 19%, the lowest of any US president since Gallup started asking the question around 1937. It's lower than Nixon's before he resigned.

This slide into ignominy is no longer driven by particular bits of bad news. The economy can only get worse; Iraq won't get significantly better. I reckon that nothing short of the capture of Osama bin Laden could reverse the belated judgement. George Bush will slope off in December into retirement as a universal laughing-stock.

Other governments can read polls too. Sarkozy, Brown and Merkel will find excuses not to be photographed with Bush. Expect state visits from Tonga, Liechtenstein and Moldova.
